A German Heritage and Celebration


New Braunfels was established by German Prince Carl of Solms in 1845 when he bought a few six miles of land for about $1000. The town eventually became the home for several German immigrants who were returning to the US.


"Braunfels" literally means "brown rock" in German, and the name of this city is named after the town of Braunfels in Germany. The residents had referred to this city as Neu-Braunfels before it took on its more English name of New Braunfels throughout the remainder of the 19th century.
